ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENT OF GATEWAY PROCESS
Commander Wayne M. McDonnell, US Army
1. INTRODUCTION
You tasked me to provide an assessment of the Gateway Experience in terms of its mechanics and ultimate practicality. As I set out to fulfill that tasking it soon became clear that in order to assess the validity and practicality of the process I needed to do enough supporting research and analysis to fully understand how and why the process works.
Frankly, sir, it took me far afield of the Gateway Program itself to determine what makes it work. But having done so, I am now able to provide a comprehensive analysis of the process and offer recommendations concerning its utility and future applications.
2. HYPNOSIS
Gateway begins correctly with a step-by-step approach to inducing the "hypnotic" state. The technique involves achieving a state of profound relaxation, then using visualization to dissociate the mind from the physical body.
3. TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION
The meditative techniques used in Gateway share significant commonality with TM, particularly the use of a repetitive mental device (the mantra in TM, the "affirmation" in Gateway) to focus consciousness and exclude external stimuli.
4. BIOFEEDBACK
Gateway involves achieving voluntary control over normally involuntary body functions by exploiting the brain's ability to perceive and regulate subtle energy states.
5. HEMI-SYNC
The heart of the Gateway technique is Hemi-Sync, a method of synchronizing right and left brain hemisphere activity through binaural beats. When the brain is presented with two slightly different frequencies in each ear, it perceives a third frequency—the difference between them. The brain then entrains to this beat frequency.
• 4 Hz (Theta) — Deep relaxation, meditation
• 7.5 Hz — Earth resonance (Schumann), telepathic range
• 10-12 Hz (Alpha) — Relaxed awareness
6. THE HOLOGRAPHIC MODEL
The universe is composed of interacting energy fields, some at rest and some in motion. It is, in and of itself, one gigantic hologram of unbelievable complexity.
According to the theories of physicist David Bohm and neurophysiologist Karl Pribram, the brain itself functions holographically, encoding and decoding frequencies rather than processing data in a linear fashion.
7. ENERGY IN THE UNIVERSE
The universe is a complex system of energy fields in constant motion. Matter is simply energy in a state of rest. The apparent solidity of matter is an illusion created by the limitations of our sensory apparatus.
At the quantum level, all matter exhibits wave-like properties. The wave pattern of any physical object can be mathematically described as a frequency.
8. CONSCIOUSNESS AS ENERGY
Consciousness is the fundamental organizing principle of energy. It exists apart from matter and yet interacts with it through the medium of the holographic pattern.
Human consciousness can be "tuned" like a radio to different frequencies, accessing different aspects of the universal hologram.
9. THE PLANCK DISTANCE
Matter oscillates between a state of rest (particle) and a state of motion (wave) at the quantum level. This oscillation occurs at the rate of 10 to the 44th power times per second (Planck's distance).
During each oscillation, matter "clicks out" of physical existence and "clicks back in." Between these states lies access to dimensions beyond physical space-time.
10. DIMENSIONS BEYOND SPACE-TIME
The Gateway process is designed to access the dimension that exists between the "clicks"—the moment when matter is neither particle nor wave, when it exists outside the constraints of time and space.
11. FOCUS 10
Focus 10 is defined as the state of "mind awake, body asleep." In this state, the physical body's activity is reduced to the point where consciousness can begin to separate from physical constraints.
The brain generates primarily Theta waves (4-7 Hz) with some Alpha (8-12 Hz). The body exhibits characteristics similar to deep sleep while the mind remains fully alert.
12. FOCUS 12
Focus 12 is described as a state of expanded awareness. Having mastered Focus 10, the participant can now expand consciousness to perceive beyond the physical body.
In this state, practitioners can:
- Ask questions and receive answers from the subconscious
- Practice remote viewing
- Engage in self-patterning (programming desired changes)
13. FOCUS 15
Focus 15 is the state of "no time"—where the practitioner moves outside the constraints of linear time. In this state, one can theoretically access any point in time, past or future.
14. FOCUS 21
Focus 21 represents the boundary between physical reality and other energy systems. It is described as a "bridge" state from which contact with non-physical entities becomes possible.
15. REMOTE VIEWING
Remote viewing involves the ability to perceive distant locations, people, or events through expanded consciousness. The technique has been extensively tested and validated under controlled laboratory conditions.
16. OUT-OF-BODY EXPERIENCES
The Gateway process can facilitate out-of-body experiences (OBEs) in which consciousness separates from the physical body and operates independently.
This is achieved through progressive relaxation, Hemi-Sync entrainment, and visualization techniques that shift the focal point of consciousness away from the physical form.
17. CONCLUSIONS
The Gateway process is a valid scientific method for achieving altered states of consciousness. It combines elements of hypnosis, meditation, and biofeedback with the unique contribution of Hemi-Sync technology.
18. RECOMMENDATIONS
It is recommended that the Gateway program be expanded and that research continue into its applications for:
- Intelligence gathering (remote viewing)
- Accelerated learning
- Stress management
- Physical healing
- Exploration of consciousness
